# ZCP Pricing V2: Compute and Storage Sold Separately

ZCP plans are now CPU and memory only. You choose the root disk size in GB when you create a server and pay the per-GB rate of the storage tier. Existing servers keep their plan and price.

Starting today, every ZCP virtual machine plan covers CPU and memory only. The root disk is a block storage volume that you size when you create the server. It is billed on its own line at the per-GB rate of the plan’s storage tier.

## Why we changed it

Customers asked for more flexibility. A bundled disk meant a small app paid for space it never used. A database that outgrew its disk had to change plan to get more.

AWS and Azure price servers this way. More CPU should not force you to buy more storage.

## What changed

- Plan names now carry a `c` before the size, for example `ca2c.m`. That is 2 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM in Montreal (YUL) on `b2.g1` (shared replicated NVMe) at $24.80 per month.
- Review and Deploy shows separate lines for compute, network, public IP, and the block storage root disk.
- The minimum root disk is the template size, about 10 GB for Linux templates. You can grow it at any time. It never shrinks.
- Custom CPU and RAM plans are retired. You pick from fixed sizes.

Root disk rates per GB per month, in CAD:

| Tier | Region | Media | Price per GB per month |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `b1.g1` | YOW | Shared replicated NVMe | $0.14 |
| `b1.g3` | YOW | Shared HDD | $0.03 |
| `b2.g1` | YUL | Shared replicated NVMe | $0.14 |
| `b2.g2` | YUL | Shared replicated SSD | $0.09 |
| `b2.l1` | YUL | Local NVMe | $0.10 |
| `b2.l2` | YUL | Local SSD | $0.07 |

## A worked example

The old bundled `ca2.m` plan was $36 per month with an 80 GB disk. Today:

- `ca2c.m` compute: $24.80
- 80 GB root disk on `b2.g1` at $0.14 per GB: $11.20
- Total: $36.00

Pick the same root size on the default tier and you pay the same total as before. Pick a smaller disk and you pay less. A network plan costs $3 per month. The public IP is billed on its own line.

## What it means for your bill

We compared each retired bundled general-purpose plan in Montreal (`ca2.*`, AMD) with its compute-only replacement plus the same disk on the default `b2.g1` tier. Every size comes to the same total, to the cent.

| Plan | Old disk | Old bundled price | New compute | Disk at $0.14/GB | New total |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `xs` | 40 GB | $9.00 | $3.40 | $5.60 | $9.00 |
| `s` | 60 GB | $18.00 | $9.60 | $8.40 | $18.00 |
| `m` | 80 GB | $36.00 | $24.80 | $11.20 | $36.00 |
| `l` | 120 GB | $72.00 | $55.20 | $16.80 | $72.00 |
| `xl` | 160 GB | $144.00 | $121.60 | $22.40 | $144.00 |
| `2xl` | 200 GB | $288.00 | $260.00 | $28.00 | $288.00 |
| `4xl` | 320 GB | $576.00 | $531.20 | $44.80 | $576.00 |
| `6xl` | 400 GB | $864.00 | $808.00 | $56.00 | $864.00 |

The change matters most on small plans. The disk made up 62% of the old `xs` price and 6.5% of the old `6xl` price. Choosing your own disk size changes a small server’s bill the most.

How much of each old bundled price paid for the disk

General-purpose Montreal AMD plans, disk priced at the b2.g1 rate of $0.14 per GB per month.

Show the data

| Plan | Disk share of old price |
| --- | --- |
| ca2.xs | 62.20% |
| ca2.s | 46.70% |
| ca2.m | 31.10% |
| ca2.l | 23.30% |
| ca2.xl | 15.60% |
| ca2.2xl | 9.70% |
| ca2.4xl | 7.80% |
| ca2.6xl | 6.50% |

The bigger change helps when you need more disk than CPU. Before, the only way to get more disk was a bigger plan. A 2 vCPU, 4 GB server with a 120 GB disk had to move to `ca2.l` at $72. You paid for CPU and memory you did not use. Today the same server costs $41.60.

Monthly cost of a 2 vCPU, 4 GB server by root disk size

Pricing V2 ca2c.m plus a b2.g1 root disk, against the cheapest old bundled plan with that much disk. CAD per month.

Show the data

| Root disk | Pricing V2: ca2c.m plus root disk | Before: cheapest bundled plan with that disk |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 20 GB | $27.60 | $36.00 |
| 40 GB | $30.40 | $36.00 |
| 60 GB | $33.20 | $36.00 |
| 80 GB | $36.00 | $36.00 |
| 100 GB | $38.80 | $72.00 |
| 120 GB | $41.60 | $72.00 |
| 160 GB | $47.20 | $144.00 |
| 200 GB | $52.80 | $288.00 |

At 80 GB the two lines meet. Below 80 GB you pay less than before. Above it you stop upgrading your plan to get space.

## Existing customers

Servers you already run keep their plan and their price. Nothing moves unless you ask it to.

## CLI and Terraform

ZCP CLI v1.0.1 sets the root disk at create time with `--blockstorage-plan` and `--root-disk-size`. The Terraform and OpenTofu provider v1.0.0 supports fixed compute plans, root-storage plans, and root-disk sizing. Read [our CLI and provider v1 announcement](https://zcp.zsoftly.ca/blog/zcp-cli-terraform-v1) for the upgrade steps and Kubernetes migration notes.

See the [pricing page](https://zcp.zsoftly.ca/pricing) for the full plan list and the calculator, which now takes a root disk size.
